Gilmore Girls: The Complete Third Season (Digipack) (DVD)
By Lauren Graham

I don't know what it is about the third seasons of my all time favorite television shows. Their third years always seem to be one of their best, if not THE best, season of the series. And this one is no exception. By this time, Gilmore Girls has grown to be one of the more accomplished, sophisticated, witty, clever, and intelligent pieces of work on television. I am constantly amazed with every episode with the magnitude of clever writing, humor, and top of the line acting. Amy Sherman-Palladino is a writer/director of immense talent, and I am still thrilled to this day that she has given us the wonderful gift of the girls. Season 3 is, in my opinion, the best season of the show yet. Filled with the colorful characters and stories that have cemented the series' reputation, season 3 delivers in all areas. Season 3 contains many of the show's top best episodes to date. The season starts off with "Those Lazy, Hazy, Crazy Days", a sunny opener. Rory's college future is first taken on in the third episode, the hysterical "Application Anxiety". One of the best episodes is "They Shoot Gilmores, Don't They?", a dazzling episode that sees Lorelei and Rory participating in the town's dance-a-thon, but things go bad when the ongoing Dean/Jess rivalry comes to a head. Fantastic. "Let The Games Begin" is a hilarious elder Gilmore centered episode that puts Rory's future college plans into question. The holidays come into play with the wonderful "A Deep Fried Korean Thanksgiving", where the girls are invited to 4 different Thanksgiving dinners. Lorelei's backstory comes into play in the teriffic "Dear Emily And Richard", a flashback rich episode that shows a young Lorelei getting pregnant with Rory, and the rift between her and her parents when she goes into labor....

Sin City (Two-Disc Theatrical & Recut, Extended, and Unrated Versions) [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
By Jessica Alba

The concept for this film started in the Comics revolution of the late 60's with incredible artists like Frank Frazetta, Jim Steranko, Neal Adams, and Barry Smith. They knew anatomy, and they used photographs to compose their backgrounds. Pre-Anime, the characters began to "almost" move off the pages. Frank Miller came along in 1978. He helped to inaugurate the adult graphics novels-larger formats, better paper, brighter inks-coupled to nudity and R-rated dialogue. Some of this has been around since the late 50's, but the new format was gathering speed and Miller was in the vanguard.

Miller's graphic novel's about SIN CITY contained art in panels that broke down like very detailed storyboards. When Robert Rodriguez decided to court Miller and sell him on the idea of converting the graphics to digital video-Miller loved it. Their partnership went so far as to have Rodriguez dropping out of the Director's Guild so that he might be permitted to put Frank Miller in the credits as co-director. Rodriguez created a B&W world where color was used sparingly-and for great effect. Blood was white-or bright red. Some eyes were blue. Some hair was blond. Pale green and pale blue showed up on classic cars.

Rodriguez assembled a powerhouse cast. Bruce Willis was first up, to boost the sales of the production and the star power. He was excellent in the film-beginning to appear very Noir-very Chandler and Hammett-a modern Bogart. Using CGI and live actors, Rodriguez was able to do most of the work in his homegrown studio in Texas. Miller created a world part pulp-novel, classic cars-and part hyper-violent martial arts and splatter film.

Gilmore Girls: The Complete Sixth Season (DVD)
By Lauren Graham

Lorelai Gilmore, as played by the wonderful Lauren Graham, is usually the merriest of characters, a wellspring of fun and laughter. However, in this sixth season of "Gilmore Girls" she is forced to cope with levels of disappointment and heartache unprecedented in the show's history. The first half of the season Lorelai is estranged from her usually "freakishly close" daughter, Rory (angelic Alexis Bledel); and in the second half she watches in anguish as her fiance and soulmate Luke (Scott Patterson) slips away from her.

Some fans of the series were upset by the Lorelai's rift (including reportedly Graham herself) but I thought it was a daring move by the writers. Rory has always been a little too good to be entirely believable, and it was interesting to watch Bledel's fine work at displaying Rory's bafflement in screwing up her life. Graham also shone as she showed Lorelai's stoicism and trademark mental toughness as well as the grief lurking underneath. When the reconciliation finally came it was a classic Gilmore moment.

The revelation of Luke's long-lost daughter was derided by many as a "Cousin Oliver" moment, and I had problems myself with the haphazard plot mechanics. But the emotional content of the storyline rang true. Scott Patterson was touching as a man clearly in over his head, and once again Graham was heartrending as Lorelai desperately tried to hang on. This season the many, many laughs were balanced by a lot of tears and some viewers didn't like it. But if you view this season as part of the journey and not the final destination I think you will get a better perspective. We all await with some trepidation a new season without the Palladinos, but given the set-up of this eventful sixth season the next could be fascinating.

Gilmore Girls: The Complete Fifth Season (DVD)
By Lauren Graham

Gilmore Girls is one of those rare shows that has maintained a consistently high standard of quality throughout its run and has even managed to get better with age. The show started with the Lorelei (Lauren Graham) & Rory (Alexis Bledel) as mother & daughter who are best friends. Rory was an innocent intellectual who was starting a prestigious high school as sophomore. Through the years, the show has transformed her from a young girl who lost herself in books and education to a young woman who is experiencing life first-hand. The change started at the end of season four when Rory sleeps with her ex-boyfriend, the married Dean (Jared Padalecki) and continues in this season with her relationship with the rich Logan Huntzberger (Matt Czuchry). The change in Rory is startling and Lorelei has a tough time dealing with it thus creating rift between the two. This season also shows the blossoming of her relationship with Luke (Scott Patterson) and how that relationship is handled by her parents Emily (Kelly Bishop) and Richard (Edward Hermann). One particular funny episode involves Richard taking Luke golfing. The best episodes of the season involve Richard & Emily's wedding to renew their vows and the fall-out from Emily's visit to Rory's father Christopher (David Sutcliffe) who shows up at the wedding and gets into a verbal fight with Luke. The season ends with Rory and Logan stealing a yacht and Rory decides to drop out of Yale. Lorelei goes to her parents for help in this matter and they agree Rory shouldn't drop out. They provide the cruelest slap of all in Lorelei's face when they renege on their promise and Rory ends up moving into the pool house. Ms. Graham is particular superb in this season and fact she was snubbed for an Emmy nomination is criminal....

I'm not sure why this movie didn't turn out better - it had a great cast and a good storyline. Dealing with what happens after you graduate from college and before your adult life begins is a tricky time period. This movie half heartedly addressed this along with other issues, the other half went for cute romance. The end result? It was too all over the place and ended up a slightly less then average movie.

I liked all of the characters except for the cheesy south american soccer player across the street but hey, his type exists. The female lead (Ryden) is part of a goofy but lovable family of self titled losers: Michale Keaton was the father full of losing money propositions, the mother was low key and the younger oddball brother was cute but the family star was Carol Burnett as the wacky grandmother. Enter the love interest who has been Ryden's best buddy all through college but would like to be more. I'll sum up the movie for you: guy follows girl around like a puppy even after he is kicked a few times, gets mad and goes away, girl realizes what she had and runs after him - the end.

Given all the talent you would think that the movie would work but it falls apart despite some good scenes (anything with Carol Burnett or the derby race). Perhaps different editing would have made all the difference? I cannot recommend this movie unless you are die hard fans of the actors.

Gilmore Girls: The Complete Second Season (Digipack Packaging) (DVD)
By Lauren Graham

The second season of "Gilmore Girls" is when a lot of things did not happen to Lorelai Gilmore. It started with Lorelai not marrying Max ("Red Light on the Wedding Night") and ended with her not marrying Christopher ("I Can't Get Started"), but Sookie got married so at least there was some progress in that area, although the duo's plan to open an inn together hits a major roadblock ("The Ins and Outs of Inns"). Of course, the most important thing that did not happen to Lorelai was that she manages to really notice Luke despite the fact he is pretty much there in front of her every morning at the diner. Clearly the creators of "Gilmore Girls" remember what happened to "Moonlighting" once Dave and Maddie stopped bantering and started kissing and other things, so the agenda is to put off the inevitable for as long as possible. So even if it is obvious to everyone else in Stars Hollow (to wit, Emily), does not mean that Lorelai has a clue.

As for Rory, her junior year at Chilton has its ups and downs. and not just because of Paris. The ups would be "The Road Trip to Harvard" and making her society debut ("Presenting Lorelai Gilmore"), while the downside would be the rift between her and her grandfather because of Dean ("Sadie, Sadie") and the problems with Dean because of Jess ("There's the Rub" and "A-Tisket, A-Tasket"). If anything, the common denominator is to make sure that none of the Gilmore women are happy, which means Rory is mad at Lorelai for blaming Jess for the accident ("Help Wanted," Lorelai is mad at Emily for arranging their going to a spa together ("There's the Rub") and Emily is mad at Richard for quitting his job without consulting here ("The Bracebridge Dinner"). What? You thought Emily was going to be mad at Rory? Are you kidding?

The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants (Widescreen Edition) (DVD)
By Amber Tamblyn

Four teenagers who couldn't be more different are all best friends that have known each other since before birth. (Their moms were all in Lamaze class together.)

They have shared hopes, dreams, and now will spend the summer sharing pants. They found a perfect pair of pants that fit both thin and curvy girls somehow. They feel that there is "magic" in those pants and good things will happen to those who wear them. They promise to send them to each location (they will go their separate ways for the summer) every few weeks. They even come up with rules about wearing the pants, "You can't ever say you are fat while wearing the pants. Only the wearer of the pants can take them off." and so on.

Lena goes to Greece to visit family, Bridget goes to soccer camp in Mexico, Carmen goes to South Carolina to visit her father that she hardly ever sees, and Tibby has to stay home and work at Wallmans while making her "suckumentary."

As they start to wear the pants, things are going wrong: Lena meets the perfect boy, but their grandparents have a feud and she is told not to see him. Bridget meets a boy as well, but he is also her coach and they are not allowed to get involved. Carmen finds that her father is going to be remarried and now he is going to have two stepchildren. They all live together in the suburbs and seem to have the perfect life. Tibby meets a 12 year old who fainted in her store and this girl follows her around while she gives interviews and wants to work for her.

Do the pants really have magic in them, or are they just imagining that great things will happen to them while wearing these jeans? One thing stays true: the four friends are there for each other throughout and support one another if things don't go the way they hoped.

Gilmore Girls: The Complete Fourth Season (DVD)
By Lauren Graham

Nominated for 1 Emmy and 1 Golden Globe in its first five seasons, Gilmore Girls has experienced much greater success among TV viewers than among industry critics. In fact, the show is the first script supported by the Family Friendly Forum's script development fund to go on and become a regular television series. Part of an initiative between The WB Network - maker of such hits as Dawson's Creek (1998), Felicity (1998), Angel (1999), and Smallville (2001) - and fellow industry executives, this push for more family-oriented programming resulted in a series showcasing a unique mother-daughter bond and the various people they encounter on their life voyage of discovery. Set in the fictional town of Stars Hollow, Connecticut, Gilmore Girls utilizes many of the same sets as the hit series The Dukes Of Hazzard (1979) - another successful Warner Brothers production from years past...

Gilmore Girls is set in a small idyllic community in Connecticut filled with a wide range of diverse characters and eccentric personalities. Against this backdrop, Lorelai Gilmore (Lauren Graham) attempts to raise her daughter and best friend, Rory Gilmore (Alexis Bledel), to carve out a better life for herself. Having made a number of youthful mistakes, Lorelai made the decision to raise her daughter by herself at a young age (the same age as Rory when the series begins), and she's bound and determined to make sure that Rory makes better decisions for herself. As Rory prepares to go off to college, she displays many of the same likes and dislikes as her mother - especially when it comes to the opposite sex, and that's what worries Lorelai the most...
